Israeli Research Shows Cannabis Reduces Blood Pressure
According to the latest research, cannabis has been shown to reduce blood pressure in adults over the age of 60. Scientists from the Ben-Gurion University of the Negev and its affiliated Soroka University Medical Center have seen a significant decrease in systolic and diastolic 24-hour blood pressure values. The cardiovascular safety of cannabis has now been proven!

New Sustainable Hope for High Blood Pressure
High blood pressure is a far more common issue than you might think, and it doesn’t only affect older people. In fact, according to the Australia Bureau of Statistics, one in three people aged 18 and over suffer from high blood pressure.
However, in people over the age of 60 it’s not only common but can also be extremely dangerous. Age-related weak vascular walls, in combination with insufficient exercise and poor nutrition, can lead to significant strokes and heart attacks. To combat this, most patients are prescribed blood thinning products. While these reduce the risks of stroke or heart attack, they come with risks of their own, such as erectile dysfunction, blood disorders, and skin cancer.
Drumroll, and spotlight on the new, healthy, sustainable hope of our favourite plant: cannabis!
The clinical study carried out in Israel was on patients who had already been prescribed cannabis for pain management. Blood pressure monitoring, EKG, blood tests and body measurements were carried out on each study participant for 24 hours before starting their cannabis use. Three months after the start of cannabis therapy, the same observations were carried out again for 24 hours.
Effects Strongest Three Hours After Consuming Cannabis
“Older adults are the fastest growing group of medical cannabis users. But there is little evidence of cardiovascular safety in this population, ” says Dr. Ran Abuhasira from the BGU Faculty of Health Sciences and the BGU-Soroka Cannabis Clinical Research Institute. “This study is part of our ongoing effort to provide clinical research on the true physiological effects of cannabis over time.”
The study, which was published in the European Journal of Internal Medicine, is the first of its kind. It focused on the effects of cannabis on blood pressure, heart rate and metabolic parameters in adults aged 60 and over with high blood pressure. The lowest blood pressure was reached just three hours after ingesting cannabis.
Now, what’s really fascinating here is that the type of cannabis consumption played no role! The study included the same kind of CBD oil online found in Australia, oil extracts, cannabis smoke, and vapor. It didn’t matter how the patients consumed the cannabis, they were just following whatever prescription/directions they were given for their pain management, and their high blood pressure was lowered!
Interestingly, the study found that the blood pressure decrease was evident during the day, but especially significant at night.
Cannabis as a New Form of Therapy Against High Blood Pressure
Based on the results of the study, cannabis therapy should now be introduced into the health system for blood pressure patients. Therapy with blood thinners involves far higher risks than with cannabis therapy!
